Zack Snyder seems to have been talking about the DVD/Blu-ray release of Watchmen for ages. Not only would the release contain tons of extras, but would also boast a director's cut of the film that would be almost thirty minutes longer than the theatrical cut of the film. Well the wait is almost over as the director's cut of Watchmen is set to hit shelves at the end of this month.
The Blu-ray version of the director's cut of the film is said to push the limits of the BD-Live feature. One of the new functions will be to synch your friends network from Facebook to BD-Live “allowing for interactive community-screening and commenting.” I'm not entirely sure what this means or what capabilities it'll unlock as far as new features will go and since I don't have a Blu-ray player (or have ever watched a full-length Blu-ray), then I guess I'll be missing out. Speculation is that you'll be able to watch Watchmen simultaneously with people off of your Facebook account who also own a Blu-ray copy of the director's cut. Here are some of the other features and extras that will be included with the Blu-ray release:
Watchmen: Director's Cut
190 minutes (theatrical version was 162 minutes)
Video: 1080p VC-1
Audio: 5.1 Dolby TrueHD
Special Features:
Keep in mind that an ultimate cut version of the film will be coming out in the near future, which is said to be 205 minutes long. The ultimate cut will have footage from Tales of the Black Freighter intercut within the film. Zack Snyder said the ultimate cut should be out sometime during the fall of 2009. So the first real question that comes to mind is, "Is this version of the film really worth owning?" That's purely up to you.
Zack Snyder also recently discussed a potential sequel to 300.
"I know for a fact that Frank [Miller] is writing right now," says Snyder, who explains that the plan is for Miller to create the story as a comic book first, "[He's] drawing away and seems to be knee-deep in it. I think he's going to head back to Greece again and do another reconnaissance."
Snyder mentions wanting to maintain the original look and atmosphere of the original film even though Miller's notes practically guarantee something larger.
"I think we would use the same technology... I don't want it to look too Star Wars-ian... Just from what [Miller] told me, it would be bigger as far as landscape and terrain. We're going to see Athens and the Aegean and other places. There would be an opportunity for bigger visions, though I'd hope for the same aesthetic. The tech we used for '300' was not a revolution. It's basically what the weatherman has. Look, instead of Accuweather it's Sparta... It's going to be the same way, but on crazier steroids."
There's also news floating around that the sequel will be both a prequel and a sequel instead of just one or the other. In addition to that, there's talk of bringing back King Leonidas from the dead in some way or another and the word, "zombie," is being tossed around quite a bit. It should be interesting seeing how this all fleshes out.
Watchmen: The Director's Cut comes to DVD and Blu-Ray July 28th.
