G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra was the frontrunner of what was released on DVD and Blu-ray yesterday, October 3rd. G.I. Joe is an elite military organization that's made up of only the fastest, strongest, and most capable soldiers around that'll do whatever is necessary to keep the world safe. At the same time, James McCullen has developed a nanotechnology-based warhead capable of destroying anything it comes in contact with. McCullen has plans to use the warheads to develop an army of super soldiers and bring about a new world order. That is unless the G.I. Joe team can step in and stop him. From what I'm reading, it looks like the two disc set only includes two special features (two documentaries; one on special effects and a making of) and a digital copy. That's a bit disappointing considering how big the movie was over the summer. I actually managed to see this while it was in theaters and loved it. If you enjoyed the animated series from 1985, then I think it's safe to say that you'll enjoy this. It felt like a live-action extended episode. One of the most entertaining films of the summer. I rated it an 8.5/10. Also released on DVD yesterday was G.I. Joe: Resolute, which was a fantastic new animated version of the franchise. It was more adult oriented littered with blood, swearing, and even them killing off main characters. Featuring new character designs and fluid animation, Resolute is well worth a look if you like G.I. Joe. It's worth seeing for the Snake Eyes/Storm Shadow sequences and Cobra Commander actually being a ruthless villain alone.

Trailers for each film pictured can be found at the bottom of the article.

Other DVD/Blu-ray releases from yesterday include the romantic comedy I Love You, Beth Cooper starring Heroes' Hayden Panettiere, the Tony Scott directed crime thriller The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 starring Denzel Washington and John Travolta, and the sci-fi comedy Aliens in the Attic. UHM's list of horror releases is a bit sparse as I don't recognize any of the titles. Looks like it may all be direct to DVD releases this week. Have a look for yourself here.

Being released in conventional theaters and IMAX this Friday, November 6th is Disney's A Christmas Carol. Robert Zemeckis gives us his unique vision of the classic tale originally written by Charles Dickens using the same motion capturing and 3D animation Zemeckis used in films such as The Polar Express and Beowulf. The film stars Jim Carrey and is sure to be a big hit this weekend. Also being released this weekend is the comedy The Men Who Stare at Goats starring George Clooney, Ewan McGregor, Jeff Bridges, and Kevin Spacey. Judging by the trailers, this looks hilarious. I'm really hoping to see this one this weekend. Richard Kelly, director of Donnie Darko, gives his take on an old Twilight Zone episode with The Box. I'll be seeing an advance screening of this tomorrow and hope to have a review up sometime thereafter. Lastly, the Milla Jovavich starring supernatural thriller The Fourth Kind will be released this Friday as well. This film seems to be garnishing a little bit of buzz on the internet, as of late. Maybe because it's because of the actual archived footage? Not sure. The reviews for the film seem to range from being lackluster to pretty good, so we'll see how it performs at the box office this weekend.

Not surprisingly, Michael Jackson's This Is It was number one at the box office this past weekend, October 30th-November 1st, while Paranormal Activity dropped to number 2. Here's the top 10:

1. Michael Jackson's This Is It
2. Paranormal Activity (rating: 8/10)
3. Law Abiding Citizen
4. Couples Retreat
5. Where the Wild Things Are (review here)
6. Saw VI
7. Astro Boy
8. The Stepfather
9. Cirque Du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant
10. Amelia
