John Woo's journey into the video game world, Stranglehold, is being adapted into a live-action film. Stranglehold was the video game sequel to John Woo's 1992 Hong Kong action film, Hard Boiled, which starred Chow Yun Fat. Chow reprised his role as Inspector "Tequila" Yuen in the game and it was the first collaboration between Woo and and Chow since Hard Boiled.

Woo's long time partner, Terence Chang, unveiled the current plans for the Stranglehold adaptation as it is being penned by Jeremy Passmore and Andre Fabrizio. Chang insists that only some of the action from Stranglehold will be recycled in the project.
"It will be a hardcore action film set in both Hong Kong and Chicago," said Chang. "We will keep some of the action set pieces of the game, but the story is different. It is a total reinvention, with a much younger Tequila. In other words, it is not a sequel to HARD-BOILED."
KFCCinema reports that Stephen Fung is in negotiations to direct the English language adaptation of Stranglehold. Fung is a Hong Kong actor who turned to directing with films like Enter the Phoenix, House of Fury, and Jump. Jump is the story of a farm girl who has dreams of becoming a big time hip hop martial arts star.

As a big fan of John Woo's work, this whole deal seems kind of bittersweet. Hard Boiled is a fan favorite as are most of the collaborative efforts between John Woo and Chow Yun Fat. I never got the chance to play Stranglehold, but I definitely wanted to. The fact that this won't be directed by John Woo and that Chow Yun Fat will be replaced kind of sours the deal a bit. We'll have to see where this goes, who will play the younger version of Tequila, and just keep an eye on the overall development before we can really decide how good or bad this'll wind up being. It's definitely got its work cut out for it though.
