Who to follow on Twitter and how to be followed

Despite Twitter having suffered a major outage yesterday – some say it was due to Barbara Walters discussing Twitter on The View – I’m still on Twitter each and every day finding more and more genealogy people to follow.  And for the most part they follow me in turn.

But how do you find people to follow and how do you get them to follow you?  These are important questions since your reputation on Twitter is based upon your level of influence and the number of followers you can attract. 

Here are a few web-based resources that can help you find people to follow on Twitter:

• Alltop – lists tweets from the “Twitterati” – those on Twitter with the most followers and most influence.
  
  
• Twellow – known as the “Yellow Pages of Twitter” this directory allows you to set up a profile with areas of interest and an extended bio.  Also search for people to follow who share your same interests.
  
  
• Mr. Tweet – billed as “your personal networking agent” you must first follow Mr. Tweet and then you’ll be hooked into a large list of people you should be following.
  
  
• Twits Like Me – searches for other Twitter users who share your interests.
  
  
• Twubble – “expand your Twitter bubble” searches for people to follow.
  
  
• Genealogy Companies and People to Follow on Twitter – from gene@pedia (a wiki for those who blog about their genealogy research), this is a list of those Twitter uses who have a passion for genealogy and family history.
