If you avidly follow bar openings, or are a sixteen-year-old girl, you might have heard the latest Pete Wentz news: He is collaborating with Matt Eisler on a bar in River North—Angels and Kings. Holy smokes! An honest to goodness celebrity bar in Chicago!
Well, Pete, I have to say, I was flattered until I learned your Chicago project was a spin-off of the bar you and your label-mates opened in NYC last year. What was it called? Oh yeah, that’s right—Angels and Kings. That hurts, Pete.
Wentz and wife Ashlee Simpson turned up to open the bar and celebrate Pete’s birthday on Tuesday June 17th. The place was packed to the rafters with media, photographers and very skinny dudes from LA. The open bar was nice, but didn’t do much to cool off the very hot room—a full ten degrees warmer inside than out. In fact, it was while trying to cool off near the bathroom when I caught a glimpse of Wentz and wife hanging out in an employees-only service room with his crew.
The look is supposed to be sort of roadhouse-dive, but with a –chic- tossed in their somewhere. Here’s the math: weathered wide planks on the walls, a raised DJ booth, leather booths, celebrity mug shots, installation art (guns!), chalkboard paint in the bathrooms (see pic) and a stage. Soon that stage is supposed to host live band karaoke led by FOB members. I won’t hold my breath.
Private invites are booked for another week or so but it’s worth a spin after that.
