Monday night, November 9, is the 71st anniversary of Kristallnacht (“the Night of Broken Glass”), when German Nazis attacked and destroyed Jewish persons and property. In Baltimore, THE ASSOCIATED: Jewish Community Federation of Baltimore, together with the Baltimore Jewish Council and the Jewish Community Center, will host “Reporting Kristallnacht: The Press and Propaganda in Germany and the United States.”

The event, which begins at 7:00PM at the Weinberg Park Heights Jewish Community Center (5700 Park Heights Ave.), will feature a keynote address by Dr. Ann Millin, a historian with the NIHE United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. Dr. Millin created the website for the museum’s newest exhibit, “State of Deception: The Power of Nazi Propaganda.”

According to the museum’s website, the Nazi Party developed a sophisticated propaganda machine that deftly spread lies about its political opponents, Jews and the need for war. But Nazi propaganda was much more complex than that. For the Nazis to achieve power and pursue their racial policies and expansionist war efforts, a much more nuanced picture had to be painted—one that would appeal to broad swaths of the population, not just a fanatical extreme. The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum’s exhibition shows how the Nazis employed propaganda to acquire power and help pave the way for war while creating a climate of hatred, suspicion and, most importantly, indifference that facilitated the elimination from society of Jews and others deemed undesirable by the Nazi state.

The images are riveting (view the slideshow). The talk will be captivating.
