Star maps on earth:  new world wellness series, part 2
A.k.a.:  what to do with that diamond you found in the marshmallow crème…

Did you ever look out at the sky on a starry night and notice how the stars, as they shine and twinkle, seem to have a unique way of communicating with us? If you were to slow down the “twinkle” of a star, you might find that the rays of light differ quite a bit from moment to moment. Sometimes the light they emanate seems to reach toward Earth, sometimes it goes up, sometimes out to either side, or in all directions simultaneously. Anyone who has ever seen a stylized star from the holidays knows how well the patterning of this image strikes a deep chord for many.

What if that diamond of meaning we discovered in our last commentary (see New World Wellness Series, Part 1) were shining like this proverbial star? It would likely have a pattern, a geometry all its own. Something we could, perhaps, slow down in order to take a look. We could “map the twinkle”, so to speak…get to know it.

As the human form, the lives and bodies of each of us, respond to the changes going on in the world today, we “twinkle” differently. That core of meaning, like a diamond in the middle of the marshmallow crème, sets about its own shining through patterns of adaptation, adjustment, and hopefully growth. A person’s meaning center may, at times, shine more brightly toward Earth, illuminating the structures that support day-to-day life: paying the bills, finding right work, cleaning the house, keeping the body in good health. At times, the meaning center might shine more brightly toward the feeling and emotional life: lighting up interpersonal relationships, resolution of the past, knowing one’s heart. Sometimes, the meaning center might shine toward one’s sense of Spirit in life, seeking larger guidance during troubled times, stretching toward an organizing sense of wholeness and at-oneness with Creation. Sometimes, a person’s meaning center might direct its light on the mind, seeking focus, moving toward clarity, lighting up ways in which change and new ideas could create a new future for self and planet.

All of these behaviors of the inner light, and more, are part of your star map on Earth, hidden within yourself. Each person has his or her own; no two are alike, though we are all related in unity and wholeness. Many world traditions offer practice ideas for acquainting oneself with this form of universal ordering within ourselves. Here are some suggestions for what to do with that diamond you found in the marshmallow crème:

1) Remind yourself of the diamond. Reread notes you may have taken, or recall your process as you considered what is most important to you (suggested in Part 1 of this series).

2) Ask yourself which area of your life your diamond is “shining” toward right now. If it were a star in slow motion, sending one of its light arms toward, for example, relationship, parenting, education, career, environment, community, or some other aspect of life, where would it be shining? For example, one person found that her meaning star was about teaching sustainability, and that it was shining toward children. She was in the process of applying for graduate degree in sustainability with an emphasis on educating K-12.

3) Using what you discover, decide on one thing you can commit to that will supporting your shining.

4) Do that something!
