A gay marriage bill in New Hampshire today was voted down by the slimmest of margins (188-186) but a new vote could be scheduled in as soon as two weeks thanks to the House's willingness to revisit the issue after some differences have been hashed out.
Information provided by the Human Rights Campaign breaks down the state of gay marriage in America:
As it stands, five states recognize same-sex marriage. These include Massachusetts, Connecticut, Iowa, Vermont, and Maine.
Five more states, including California, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Oregon, and Washington offer "state level benefits and responsibilities of marriage" via civil unions or domestic partnerships.
New York is currently considering legislation to permit gay marriage.
Colorado is one of 30 states that have Constitutional language defining marriage as between a man and a woman or banning same-sex marriage.
