On Thursday at about 3:30 pm, a man was shot inside the popular Chopsticks and Sushi restaurant on Welton Street, just off the 16th Street Mall (map.) The victim was taken to Denver Health and pronounced dead, with multiple gunshot wounds. The street was closed for hours as police detained and questioned people inside the restaurant, and people walking by stopped to either express surprise at the incident or shake their heads at a perceived danger inherent to the downtown area.
The victim has been identified as 29-year-old Lloyd Running Bear Jr, and Police have arrested Yan De Yang, the 40-year old owner of the restaurant, who is now under investigation for murder. Police confirmed that the shooting followed an altercation involving several people at the restaurant, but only one gun was involved—one allegedly fired by Yang. The Denver District Attorney is expected to file formal charges against Yang in the next few days.
