(Re)Collect, is an exhibition highlighting a selection of the Art Center’s faculty whose work complicates notions of memory through embracing its slippery nature. Curated by Interim Exhibitions Manager, Francesca Wilmott, the exhibition underscores the correspondence between the physical act of gathering artistic source material and the conceptual act of recollecting the past. Together, the artworks demonstrate the repetitive, compulsive, and often deceptive, nature of retrospection.
Scission is a tracing of distorted limbs and speaks to the mobility of memory. Translucent paper skins were created utilizing 15-year old plaster casts of the artist’s feet and legs. Alluding to the way we half-recall names, places or experiences, the anterior is detached from the posterior, teasing a connection. No matter how hard we implore our memory to conjure it, the things we seek to recall remain phantoms.
Over the duration of the exhibition, the artist will perform the quiet gesture of sewing the halves together, transforming the installation over time.-Jessie T. Walsh
