Elizabeth Murray's exhibition at The Arts Cub of Chicago is an rare and extremely wonderful opportunity to get to view 11 large scale pieces of the late artist works. Elizabeth Murray's (1940-2007) large scale pieces from the 1980's-2007 show a variety in her work with her famous shaped paintings to free flowing cartoon imagery. Her shaped pieces ofter have a combination of diagonal hard edges and curved forms. The compositions of the canvases are joined together like puzzle pieces that do not fit together but hold through tension and the painted organic colored shapes on the canvases. Her large scale works, twice the size of a human, have a great sense of color with a pretty limited pallet, often in a red, yellow, blue, green and rusty brown. While muted in color, the painting seem to be all about color in relationship to the shapes and forms. Painted in encaustics (wax), the thick surfaces adds to the unusual shapes. Some of her flat square paintings have more graffiti like cartoon imagery with a phase using her hot pink and brighter colors. Also on display are some of her drawing and collages. This is a terrific opportunity to see a well hung overview of Elizabeth Murray's works in a building well suited for large scale works, where the viewer can stand back and get a good look the artwork. Ms Murray's artwork is collected in many museums such as the MET in New York, Hirshhorn in DC among many other major museums. Elizabeth Murray received a BFA and Honorary Doctorate from The School of the Art institute of Chicago. The exhibition is on view through November 20th, 2009 at 201 East Ontario Street.
