While there are countless places around Colorado to purchase a beer in bars, pubs, taverns, brewpubs and microbreweries, there are times when you simply want to buy your beer and enjoy it from the comfort and privacy of your own home. Beer drinkers around Denver and Northern Colorado who don’t live near a brewery and wish to take home their favorite beers need to find a great store with a big selection.
Chipper Dave has surveyed a list of some of the biggest and best liquor stores in the Denver metro and northern Colorado areas. Listed below are some of the most noteworthy beer stores who offer a great selection of local, out-of-state and imported beers. Look here for a great store near you and stock up for the long holiday weekend ahead.
Total Beverage – Thornton, CO. They boast over 1000 different beers. “Everything you can think to drink”. Lots of shelf space dedicated to building your own 6-pack. They offer a unique beer of the month club with a different style theme each month. Frequent Shopper Card offers discounts and bonuses. In store tastings Fridays and Saturdays.

Liquor Max – Loveland, CO – A liquor warehouse with over 800 different beers in stock. Just 17,000 square feet but don’t let that fool you. They have a 44 door beer cooler in the back of the store with a selection that is hard to match elsewhere. Build your own 6-pack. They even ship beer out of state! Very knowledgeable staff. Comes highly recommended from BeerAdvocate forum users. Worth the trip north. Now open Sundays 10am-7pm.

Daveco Liquors – Thornton, CO. Proven to be the world’s largest liquor store (Guinness’ Book of World Records). Daveco has a great Belgian beer selection and lots of local brews. The store engulfs 102,000 square feet with over 800 different beers in stock. There’s over $3 million in total inventory here. Something in stock for every adult’s taste.

Davidson’s Liquors – Highlands Ranch. A superstore of liquor. Over 46,000 square feet of beverages. Specializing in rare beer imports. Reserved coolers just for 22oz bombers. Huge beer selection and is considered one of the best around.

Liquor Mart – Boulder, CO. Over 50 beer coolers on site with nearly 300 kegs in stock. If they don’t have it they will special order for you from their Colorado distributors. Look for their online coupons. Build your own 6-pack with a 20% discount. Now open Sundays 10am-6pm.

Tipsy’s Liquor World – Littleton, CO. Opened in 2008. Large 87,000 square foot building with LCD TVs showing sports. Wine tasting bar and deli built in with a live piano player. Claims over 1800 different beers with occasional tastings. Chilled specialty room.

Superior Liquor – Boulder, CO. Between Denver and Boulder off US36. Discounts with their savings club. Weekly specials on beer. Local delivery available.

Libations Wine & Spirits – Aurora, CO. Award winning beer selections. Check out their rewards program. Discounts on all purchases over $20. Subscribe to their newsletter for info on specials and discounts. Monthly on-going beer specials.

Applejack Wine & Spirits – Wheat Ridge, CO. Get discounts with their Advantage Card and look for the Manager specials. Searchable product inventory online with prices. Buy individual bottles, 6-packs, cases or kegs.

Argonaut Wine & Liquor – Denver, CO. The store is expanding and may have their sights on beating out Daveco for the largest. One of the biggest in the state. Open Sundays 10am-6pm. Denver’s largest liquor store. Online newsletter and specials. Preferred Shopper card specials. Decent beer selection.
Address: 700 East Colfax (at Washington), Denver, CO – 303-831-7788.
Wilbur’s Total Beverage – Fort Collins, CO – Huge amount of cooler space dedicated to micros. Large selection of locals and imports. Nice singles section to build your own 6-pack. Check out the Rewards Club for discounts and specials. This college town store knows it’s beer.

While there are so many other great stores in Colorado, there isn’t enough room to list them all. Over the coming months, more of these stores will be featured.
To get your best beer for your buck, be sure to always look for the newspaper or online store coupons. Many of these stores have newsletters and offer discounts to subscribers and frequent shoppers. With today’s high prices for just about everything, it pays to shop around and find the best deals. Best of all – these stores are now open on Sundays thanks to the removal of the Colorado blue laws as of July 1st.
