Nobel Laureate Alan Heeger (2000 for chemistry) will present playwright Anna Ziegler with the 2008 STAGE International Script Competition prize on April 11 at the Fountain Theatre. The prize, accompanied by a check for $10,000, will be given during a brief ceremony prior to the performance of Ziegler's "Photograph 51." "Photograph 51" is making its west coast premiere and is based on the research of British biophysicist Rosalind Franklin whose research and photograph led to the historic discovery of the structure of DNA.
Ziegler's play raises questions about sexism, scientific collaboration, ethics and women in the workplace.
STAGE stands for Scientists, Technologists and Artists Generating Exploration and is their third annual award for Best New Play about Science and Technology. Ziegler's play was chosen from 150 entries by a panel of judges that included Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award winner David Auburn; Olivier and Obie Award-winner playwright David Lindsay-Abaire and Nobel Laureate in physics Douglas Osheroff. STAGE is a unique collaboration between the Professional Artists Lab and the California NanoSystems Institute. Both organizatons are housed at the University of California, Santa Barbara.
Heeger is currently at the Institute for Polymers & Organic Solids at UCSB.
