Is it the last Friday of the month already? Wow, September really flew by; it's already time for another Critical Mass ride!
For those who have been living in a cave between 5:30 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. on the last Friday of each month, Critical Mass is a humongous community bike ride that starts in Daley Plaza and goes wherever the participants decide for however long they stay interested. Hundreds of cyclists take back the streets in a slightly-less-rushed rush hour, cruising down major thoroughfares and shouting "Happy Friday!" along the way. The best part is that in a city with what can be an intimidating hardcore bike community, Mass rides have no leadership, no fixie-elitism and no political agenda. As the site says, "You can drive a car the whole month and ride in the Mass. You can be an anarchist and ride in the Mass. The point of the Mass is the Mass, nothing more."
Amen. Riding bikes is fun. Riding bikes with a ton of people down any major street you please is super fun. What better plans do you have on a beautiful, 75-degree Friday evening?
