Although it has been in the works for some time, it was officially announced Monday that the investigation of the death of Brian Jones, founding member of the Rolling Stones, will be reopened.

Investigative reporter Scott Jones (no relation) turned over more than six hundred files to British authorities, after his research pointed to the possibility that Brian Jones may have been murdered. Last year, the reporter wrote a review in the Daily Mail, prompting the decision to take another look at the case.

This recent news came to me as a very odd coincidence. It was just a couple weeks ago that I was inspired to start an investigation of my own, although mine would be confined to the Internet. I'm not exactly sure if it was a song or something I had read, that spurred me to start searching for any information I could find, but reporter Scott Jones' name came up quite a few times in my searching. There are also, in fact, two books published in 1994 that seem to have similar information. The books, Paint it Black: The Murder of Brian Jones, by Geoffrey Guiliano, and Who Killed Christopher Robin? by Terry Rawlings, point to a deathbed confession by a contractor who was with Jones the night of his death.

The main reason I don't get into all the particulars here, is that there are plenty of versions out there for anyone interested. My main concern is that the opinions that say "let the poor soul rest in peace" and "reopening the case will not bring him back" are beside the point. The cause of "death by misadventure" was a hurried conclusion, at the very least. It seems that a re-examination of the information may bring certain authorities to task for betraying the public trust. I think the memory of Brian Jones deserves at least that much respect.
