Matthew 9:10-13 (King James Version):
10And it came to pass, as Jesus sat at meat in the house, behold, many publicans and sinners came and sat down with him and his disciples.
11And when the Pharisees saw it, they said unto his disciples, Why eateth your Master with publicans and sinners?
12But when Jesus heard that, he said unto them, They that be whole need not a physician, but they that are sick.
13But go ye and learn what that meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice: for I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.
Note the question the Pharisees had asked, in verse 11. They were too "righteous" to have anything to do with those "in the gutter" of sin. The same attitude exists today. There are those who are "too righteous" to even go to church, and feel they don't need the Lord, or that God understands. - "Oh, I think I'm a good person!" or "I don't bother nobody!"
Salvation goes further than one's own claim to be fit for heaven. God has a standard . . . it's called holiness! Is self-righteousness so important that it's worth rejecting Christ, for hell? But, God's mercy is available to anyone who's willing to acknowledge their own sinful state to obtain his power unto a holy life, to escape it. And, it's sin that separates one from God, but repentance unto salvation reconciles one to him.
And if anyone is "too good to be true" towards obeying God's word to that effect, they don't deserve eternal life with the One who's able to forgive and cleanse from the sin, which'll be the catalyst for a worser punishment. For all the self-sacrifices means nothing to God, unless it's motivated and "lit" by the Holy Ghost dwelling in one's life.
Therefore, you can either be true and honest towards God, and receive his salvation towards a "daily walk" with him; or continue to kid yourself into believing that God will overlook unresolved sin, being too good to be true in obeying his word? The choice is simple. But, to make excuses to not serve the Lord only shows that one needs his power in their life, so that life without him doesn't turn into the regret for one's eternity.
