With thirty-six novels to his credit, one might think that Saul was a natural born storyteller. But his road to publication was anything but conventional, and it was perhaps equal parts luck and perseverance that led to the fruition of his break-out novel, Suffer the Children (1977). Saul had attended a handful of colleges (with an eclectic selection of majors) before dropping out and deciding to become a writer. It took fifteen years to realize that dream—and in that time, he worked an array of jobs while collecting an impressive number of unpublished manuscripts. In 1976, one of those manuscripts reached Dell. And while they didn’t buy the book, they offered Saul the opportunity to try his hand at writing a psychological thriller. Both his agent and Dell felt that the outline he later submitted had all the makings of a bestseller, and so the publisher took a risk and backed the book with heavy television promotion. The gamble paid off, and each subsequent release has reached audiences around the world.
Saul’s newest, House of Reckoning, is the story of fourteen-year-old Sarah Crane, who is sent to live with a foster family after her father’s incarceration for killing a man in a barroom brawl and then injuring her in a drunken car crash. The motherless girl finds herself ostracized, both within her new home and at school, befriending only fellow outsider Nick Dunnigan, a former mental patient who is plagued by visions and voices, and an eccentric teacher, Bettina Phillips, who nurtures her talent for painting. Within the walls of Bettina’s ancestral home (a mansion called Shutters), disturbing and violent images from the house’s dark history begin to manifest themselves in both Sarah’s artwork and Nick’s hallucinations. The spirits seek to exploit this gateway into the world of the living, leaving Sarah and Nick in possession of the power of control. And revenge…
Copies of House of Reckoning will be available for purchase from Spin Street.
