Where can your kids operate a colonial computer, fish with a trap net,  and help plant green gold?  When they attend Spring Homeschool Day at Historic St. Mary's City!  This event is chock-full of things to see and do. As one of my fellow homeschoolers put it "their homeschool day is truly an all-hands on deck event!"  Four living history sites will help your children discover the 17th century via:

  • the Woodland Indian Hamlet
  • the waterfront and Maryland Dove
  • the Town Center
  • the Godiah Spray Tobacco Plantation

Your kids will learn by doing with hands-on activities as well as demonstrations, including:

  • Heave Ho! Anchor-raising demo
  • Give Fire! Militia demo at Town Center
  • Help plant green gold
  • Learn to operate a colonial computer (which my daughter still talks about!)
  • Apprentice at a colonial printing press
  • Learn how Yaocomaco made string

Having visited St. Mary's City numerous times, both as a college student and more recently with my children, I have seen the attention to detail and immense work that has brought the 17th century to life again in Maryland. (On a long-ago date with a short-lived boyfriend, I even helped with one of the archaeological digs! ) As you walk the many paths and look out over the water, you get a sense of what life was like for the early settlers.  There is a reconstructed State House (from 1676) also on the property, which is one of my favorite buildings to visit.  When you drive into St. Mary's City, through the college, be sure to look for the "Freedom of Conscience" statue, it is toward the right-hand side of the road, just after you see the river.  And, the police are very serious about enforcing the speed limit in the area, so drive carefully.

Historic St. Mary's City is a beautiful, peaceful, waterfront location, located about ninety minutes south of Washington, DC, in St. Mary's City, Maryland. The Spring Homeschool Event is on Tuesday, April 7th, 2009, from 10am until 5pm. Admission for the homeschool event is $9 for adults, $3.00 children ages 3-18, free for ages 3 and under.  A $10, deductible, non-refundable fee is due at the time of registration.  Call 240.895.4979 for more information, or visit their website. This event will be for a limited number of participants, so be sure to register early.  If you cannot attend this event, ask the staff about setting up an event just for your group.  This is one field trip you and your kids will not want to miss!
