In the midst of bustling Georgetown lies the beautiful Dumbarton House, home to the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America. The house has been a part of Georgetown for over two centuries. It is a showcase of Federal architecture, furniture and decorative pieces, and brings early American history alive for its visitors. On April 2nd, they are hosting a special event just for homeschoolers! The event will encourage children ages 5-12 to explore early Washington, DC history.
The program will include:
Plus, a resource packet will be provided for parents, that includes activities which will reinforce the day's program. Three classes will be offered at one time: Time Travels (pre-K-1st grade), Capital Quest (2nd-3rd grade) and Explore 1805 (4th - 6th grade). The museum will be assigning the students to a class, and they ask that each child participate in the class which is appropriate for their grade level. The program will run from 10am until noon, and spaces are limited.
The museum's Bell Vue room and the gardens will be available after the program, and families are encouraged to bring a picnic lunch.
The program is $6 per child and $3 per adult. Please contact the museum directly to make reservations and arrange advance payment (they do not accept credit cards over the phone.) The Dumbarton House is located at 2715 Que St., NW and is accessible by Metro. Take the Red Line to the Dupont Circle Station, Q St. north exit. The house is approximately six blocks west on Q Street, just over the Q Street Bridge in Georgetown--a short walk, or bus ride on the D-2 or D-6 bus lines.
