If you are like me, or rather if you are like my daughter, you cannot live without a baby carrier. There are numerous variations out there and the choice can be overwhelming. It all depends on your child, your mothering preferences and your sewing skills.
I use a Mei Tai but I am a veteran of several baby carriers that did not pass muster. This article is for all moms looking to free up some hands, help bay take a nap or looking to get out on the town without a giant stroller. Let's take a look at just a few you can make for yourself.
Mei Tai: This is by far my favorite and I will tell you why. This carrier is fully adjustable. You can hold you babe close and she can hear you heart, feel you skin and it all feels familiar like the womb. The Mei Tai can be worn on the front, side and back with an abundance of videos showing you how. These carriers are simple to make and you can customize it to your baby's gender and your style. Here are several patterns and even a slipcover.
Slings
My little one spent the better part of her first 2 months in a sling. It is perfect for bundling them up, keeping baby on an incline (a must to keep food down and to ease reflux), and keeping stimulation to a minimum. Slings can be used well in to the toddler years and are great for freeing up your arms.
Wraps
While I have not tried a baby wrap it is on my list to make and enjoy. I have seen many one TV and around town. They seem a great way to carry a sleeping baby, especially newborns and offer discreet nursing. Wraps, particularly the knit versions, seem ideal in the warmer weather.
No Sew- single piece of cloth
Of course, if you don't sew and have fabric long enough you can fashion your own carrier with just some instructions from some Master Baby Wearers found here.
Be creative; you can never have too many baby carriers. They make great gifts for new moms. Baby carriers are a great way to free your arms, relieve stress (it is always less stressful when baby is happy) and bond with your baby. My baby carriers help me lead a 'normal' life, the little one naps and I stay sane.
