During a recent trip to the hardware store where I enevitably ended up in my favorite section, the paint department, I discovered chalkboard paint. I was excited and bursting with ideas, the first of which was that my blank wall in the kitchen was perfect for a huge chalkboard. my new chalkboard would feature icecream flavors, doctors appts and phone numbers.
The project was easy and not time consuming. The only frustrating part was waiting 3 days for the paint to cure before I could write on it.
Materials needed:
Chalkboard paint
Paint roller
Paint tray
Painter's tape
Level/ruler
Pencil
I started by washing the wall with a damp cloth. Once the wall was dry, I measured out the shape of chalkboard in pencil. When mapping out your chalkboard take into consideration any trim you might want to add. We will add trim to ours later. Next tape over the pencil lines with painter's tape. Be sure to choose wide tape (2 inches or more); it makes it easier to paint along the edge. Now we paint! Stir your chalkboard paint very carefully and throughly. Apply it lightly to your wall in thin layers and evenly. You can apply another layer according to the instructions. Once your chalkboard is painted, carefully remove the painter's tape.
Now we wait... 3 days for the paint to cure. The next step is optional but is definitely worth it. Lightly rub your entire chalkboard with chalk and then erase. This step is called conditioning and makes it easier to erase overall. Be sure to reapply this conditioning everytime you wash your chalkboard.
Congrats you are done and have a nifty chalkboard to boot. Enjoy and consider all the other areas in your home that could use a chalkboard. Closet doors, kids rooms, and garages are great places to add a chalkboard.
