Make your own Door Plaque!

With a few simple tools and just a little bit of time you can spice up your home with colorful or traditional door plaques.

Materials needed:

Quilting Template Plastic or Cardstock (both available at your craft store)

Craft knife

Small paint brush or sponge applicator

Painter's tape

Instructions: Download the images to the right or search for clip art (I found the 'D' monogram on Martha's website) or create your own in Illustrator. You can adjust the size in a photo-editing program or a copier. Once printed or copied to size, tape the plaque on top of your template plastic or cardstock and cut out using your craft knife. Be very careful, you will use your scraps later.

Once you have your plaque cut out and all your scraps saved, tape your plaque template to your door in the desired location with painters tape. Lightly apply paint to your template. If it is too thick it might drip or seep under the template. After the first coat pull up your template. If you leave the template till the paint dries, the paint will dry to the template and when you pull it up you could pull off the paint as well as the template. If one coat is not enough coverage, you can apply the template again (once the 1st coat has dried).

Now you can use your scraps to add you letters. I found that the inside scrap of the plaque really helped to line up the letters since it fit perfectly. Just make sure you cut out your letters from this scrap. You can then use the scraps from the letters as templates for the inside of the letters (ie. D, A, O, etc) or for details like the highlights in the 'D' above. I just held these in place and painted around them. You can use a small brush to touch up any edges or thin spots.

The door plaques are great for kids rooms, nursery walls, bathrooms, or kids lockers/cubbies.
