When you clothe yourself, it is not unreasonable to expect to wear clothing for months or years. That cannot be said for babies and children. Often what kids wear one day may not fit the next. Hand-me-downs and gently used clothing are a great option but sometimes you just want something new and special.
Making your children's clothing is a great option. Fit and perfection is much less of a factor than with adult clothing. You choose all the details, such as buttons, ruffles and fabric to cater to your child's personality or comfort. The greatest thing about making kids clothes is that it takes no time at all. Here are a few of my favorite patterns to get you started.
Oliver + S: For a more traditional, vintage take on children's clothes, Oliver + S are on trend and fun to make. Google your favorite pattern to gain inspiration and for different fabric ideas.
Sew Baby: Offering everything from baby hats and booties to an entire layette set, Sew Baby offers everything for baby and kids. Not only will you find patterns you want to make but your kids will love picking out something too.
BurdaStyle: This site features free patterns from the editors and contributors. My favorites are the collection of hand puppets, but you will also find vests, booties and hats to name just a few. Each pattern is rate for difficulty and satisfaction.
Bonnie Blue Designs: So simple but elegant at the same time. These designs can be casual or gussied up for church or a wedding. I love the hand drawn pictures. The Bonnie Blue collection is a vast collection of basics but you are sure to find any dress or pant to fit your need or in my case my favorite dress from when I was 6 years old!
You can make this: With pictures featuring some of the most popular fabric patterns, these patterns are eye catching and fun. Everything from tutus and ruffle pants to twirly skirts and dresses. This site features mostly girls clothing, you will find an occasional boys pattern. Most of this clothing reminds me of the popular Matilda Jane collection.
Pillowcase dress: Let's not forget the old favorite, the pillowcase dress. Any newbie can feel confident making this dress. There is little cutting and no yardage measuring. This is the simplest and, by far, the cutest.
These are just a few of the more popular children's patterns available on the web today. Some are free and some are not. However, even the few dollars most patterns cost entitle you to endless variations, choice of fabrics and a one time investment on clothes that will continue to grow with your children. Enjoy!
