Anyone who follows country music usually gets to know the common patterns, themes, and even physical images that are followed by writers and artists. Generally though, somewhat of an individualistic approach and writing personality is needed for lasting commercial success. Make no mistake that Gary Allan is a one of a kind artist that is positively in a league of his own. He consistently brings listeners a variety of heartfelt tunes that contain the utmost honesty and transparency about who he is as a person and as an artist. To date, he has recorded nine albums that prove this individuality to be true.
From the second I heard Gary's new CD entitled "Get Off On The Pain" would be released on Tuesday, March 9th I knew I wanted to be among the first buyers. Needless to say, I am a faithful and diehard Gary Allan fan to a fault. Always have been….always will be. Let me quickly say that I do not purchase many CDS and with few exceptions, I generally do not run out on the day of the release. Not only did I run out on the day of the release for this one, but I ran across town over my lunch break just to get my hands on it. I knew I could get it that night, but couldn't wait knowing I could listen to it at work for the rest of the day. I mean why wait, right? Thankfully, the shelf at Target contained one last copy of "Get Off on the Pain." I decided it must be my lucky day and walked away a proud buyer.
After quickly peeling off the plastic and taking my first listen, the title cut "Get Off on the Pain" immediately struck my attention. As always, Allan is never afraid to sing about living a hard and untraditional lifestyle. This song speaks of always going for the long shots, lost causes, and riding the wrong roads as fast as you can. This is a very true song that hadn't yet been done, and a great title cut to lead into the rest of his new recordings. His second song, "I've Had Enough" is also a really neat concept that I have yet to hear on country radio. Usually we associate "I've Had Enough" with giving up, but in this song Allan cleverly associates it with "giving in" to love.
Although every song on Allan's album is always attention worthy, "Kiss me while I'm down" especially hit me as well. In this song, the man is so lovesick about someone that he's willing to settle for an hour or two with them knowing that their time together will be absent of any promise or hope for any future whatsoever. "Tell me lies I won't believe….Just don't wake me when you leave…Come on over…Kick me to the ground…Kiss me when I'm down." This song is perfect for all listeners that have ever loved without being loved in return. They willingly settle for having a little bit of that person because its better than having none of them at all.
"No regrets" is another very heartfelt song about coming to a peace of mind in a past relationship. "She Gets Me" is a feel good catchy tune in which a man and woman have a mutual love and understanding for one another. "When You Give Yourself Away" speaks about the depth of falling in love and the risk that we all take in doing so. "That Ain't Gonna Fly," "Along The Way" and "We Fly By Night" contribute to rounding out a great variety of new Gary Allan tunes. However, a Gary Allan album review most certainly cannot be wrapped up without mentioning his first radio release "Today." "Today" is an emotional story of a man that is coming to the grips of reality that he has lost the love of his life and "Today" she will marry someone else. "Today" is a deserving chart topper that has been circulating air waves everywhere.
From singing about tattoos, scars, broken hearts, loss, forgiveness and love it is obvious that Gary has lived his songs. As a result, he clearly exudes strength and perseverance. It is safe to say that you will never find an artist more open and genuine than Allan. His distinctive voice and unique style truly set him apart as a one of a kind talent in the Nashville scene. Whether you are male or female, you will enjoy this album. The messages of Allan's music are versatile and diverse. Though his tunes contain the hard knocks of life, they also contain the encouragement that the more you face, the stronger you become. As a female, I decided "Today" that Gary Allan must be the only man on earth that actually understands me. Congratulations Gary, you have done it again! "Keep em comin….and we will keep on listenin and buyin!"
