For starters Joel Connelly has enough material to write a firmly negative take on Christine Gregoire's re-election campaign.
In not so stunning news, Connelly finds that just like 2004, Gregoire is a much more effective bureaucrat than campaigner. More importantly, Connelly also finds copious gnashing of teeth about Gregoire's current efforts on the trail, including:
A veteran national Democratic Party strategist termed the governor's kickoff spot "badly written and a bit hokey," and tone deaf to the public mood."People are upset and this flies in the face of their concerns about the cost of gas, rising unemployment, the ferry system disaster and the problems in state agencies," he added.
This, again, is highly reminiscent of 2004, when Gregoire couldn't close the deal in the waning months of a campaign in which she was the heavy favorite. Here's the kicker from Connelly in assessing this year's effort:
In a larger sense, the governor's re-election -- and her legacy -- depend on the Illinois senator. Obama is needed to turn out the volunteers and register new voters.
A Democratic incumbent in a blue state in desperate need of a turnout boost from up the ticket in 2008 of all years is quite a peculiar sight.
Add it all up, and Dino Rossi's campaign announcing its astounding 38,000th contributor on Thursday makes a lot more sense.
