If you're reading this column then you're familiar with the Examiner.com platform.
The mission statement here is "The insider source for everything local." Basically, there's an Examiner in every neighborhood who knows that neighborhood like no one else can. This mantra ironically parallels the explosive growth of craft beer industry as it tries to once again have a brewery in every neighborhood.
As much of a Beer Geek as I am, and as fortunate as I am to live in the heart of one of the best beer cultures in the country (we ain't called the Napa Valley of the Beer World for nuthin'), it's still impossible to keep track of the Craft Beer Retnaissance flowing across this great country of ours. Unless you're Beerniac (Brainiac's drunk cousin), or you've somehow managed to jack into The Matrix, staying on top of all the Beer Buzz from every beer town is impossible. And that's where having a network of liked mined "Beer Geeks" on your side is so valuable. Think of it as getting a little (OK, a heckuva lot) help from your friends.
There are roughly 30 Beer Examiners (BX for short). Led by National Beer Examiner Charlie Papazian, these beer scribes stretch from Portland, Oregon to Portland, Maine. Every day these Beer Crusaders are dolling out detailed info from the front lines. Want to know what's going on with the St. Louis beer scene? Check out Bryce Eddings' column. Heading to the City by the Bay and want to know what craft beer to drink while sucking down fresh seafood? Hit up Brian Yeager's column.
If the above names sound familiar... it's because they should. Charlie Papazian is the legendary Godfather of Homebrewing who penned The Complete Joy of Homebrewing, founded the Great American Beer Festival, the American Homebrewers Association, and the Association of Brewers. Bryce Eddings is a veteran beer writer whose articles can be found in many of today's best beer magazines (he's also the About.com Beer guy). And Brian Yeager is the author of Red, White, and Brew: An American Beer Odyssey.
Beer Examiners have the credentials that make them knowledgeable and trustworthy. More importantly, they're passionate about beer and want to share their insights with others... in a way that only local insiders can do. Personally, I read every BX column to stay in the loop.
And guess what? We want you to be a part of the BX Crew. As our numbers grow it allows us to spread the word of craft beery goodness to the masses, which helps move the Craft Beer Renaissance that much further and faster across the country.
So what makes Examiner.com different from all the other community journalism sites?
In order to write for Examiner.com you must go through a background check. This legitimizes the writer and this site. There are guidelines that must be followed, just like any professional journalism business. This thing isn't owned by some Wile E. Coyote ACME Corporation. Examiner.com is a division of the Clarity Media Group, and is wholly owned by The Anschutz Company. Denver multi-billionaire Philip Anschutz founded Qwest Communications, owns newspaper companies like The San Francisco Examiner and The Washington Examiner, and has a stable of entertainment, media, and sports businesses. What other site can say they have backing like that? Not a one. Furthermore, you get paid for writing about your passion. Examiner.com currently serves hundreds of cities and towns in 70 major markets across the country. With your help, that will grow to become an unstoppable (and unquenchable) force.
But enough of the sales pitch (or least something that sounds like a sales pitch). If you're interested in joining the BX Crew, and we hope that you do... start here.
Hop on board the Beer Examiner wagon. We could use the help fighting the good fight!
P.S. Tell 'em Eli sent ya. ;)
