Masahiro Sakurai, better known as the creator of Kirby and the designer behind the Super Smash Bros series, has broke ground on a new project with his newly formed company Project Sora (in Japanese, translations provided by Kotaku), today.
While little is known about the new project their has been some releases ensuring it is not another Smash Bros game. Sakurai has stated that, "I can promise an experience that's different from anything [you've played] up until now." In addition, he promises that "we will have Nintendo's full cooperation and make something that Nintendo could not do on its own." It has been described as "a new experiment, both for Mr. Sakurai and for Nintendo."
It is unlikely we will begin getting deeper details on the project for quite some time, but given Sakurai's credentials we can hardly expect anything less than amazing.
In addition, Sakurai has mentioned that it will not fall into the Touch Generations catalog of games, hopefully meaning it will cater more towards the more hardcore audience. "If one were simply considering effective use of funding, we'd have went with a plan similar to Touch Generations. But that's not I wanted."
While a more hardcore approach to a game is definitely something that is sorely lacking on the Wii, the question remains if this undertaking will be received positively by its core demographic. While many other companies are beginning to port over games such as Dead Rising, Dead Space and Bioshock there has been a void of exclusives that has only barely begun being addressed. Perhaps if Sakurai and Project Sora score big on this venture, as well as the former-Clover now-Platinum Games upcoming Madworld, we will start to see more publishers looking to make less-gimmicky and unenhanced ports games, and work on using the Wii to its fullest capability.
