Cypress surroundings

Go back to the natural, majestic wonders of the wilderness and primeval beauty at Battle Creek Cypress Swamp Sanctuary. Located in Prince Frederick, this area is the northern most region in the country where you can find bald cypress trees growing naturally.

A visit to this isolated 100 acre nature sanctuary brings guests back to a moment reminiscent of the lands of 100,000 years ago. Back then, cypress swamps were common and several now extinct animals, including the mammoth, roamed freely. As you walk along the quarter-mile boardwalk trail, you will enjoy the abundance of flora and fauna including a multitude of various kinds of birds and cypress trees that can grow over 100 feet and have been growing for a thousand years.

A wonderful nature center is located onsite which includes a fantastic collection of exhibits on the cultural history and wildlife of the surrounding area. Live animal exhibits are among the fascinating exhibits. Included popular critters include an albino snapping turtle, barred owl and many reptiles. You will find dozens of snake species.

The Nature Conservancy has owned the land since 1957. The Calvert County Natural Resources Division provides a variety of educational programs and other activities available year-round. “The Battle Creek Nature Education Society is dedicated to the development of a responsible environmental ethic in all people y providing opportunities for environmental education and compatible recreation; and the preservation of the natural heritage of Calvert County primarily within the mission of the Calvert County Natural Resources Division,” so reads the mission statement.

If you enjoy Battle Creek Cypress Swamp, you may also enjoy visiting other affiliated areas. Flag Ponds Nature Park, in Lusby, is one of three public beaches on the Chesapeake Bay, in Calvert County, where visitors frequently find ancient fossils deposited from the Calvert Cliffs. Kings Landing Park, in Huntingtown, offers a variety of natural activities including boating, fishing on a 200-foot pier, a live theater in the woods and much more.

Battle Creek Cypress Swamp is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Battle Creek Cypress Swamp does not operate on Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s Day or on Mondays. Admission is free to all visitors. For more information, call 410-535-5327.
