I ended up in Wrigleyville again today. Clearly I'm more fond of my soon-to-be neighborhood than I care to admit. This time I met up with a friend at Cafe Avanti over on Southport, and yes, I had to walk right by Sensational Bites to get there. This, as I'm sure you can imagine, was no easy task. Once I stepped up to Cafe Avanti's pastry lined-counter though, I was thrilled to have saved my appetite.
Cookies, cakes, croissants and scones...this place had it goin' on. And when I found out that the cafe gets all that sweet stuff shipped over from Chicago's own Bleeding Heart Bakery, my excitement grew tenfold. Bleeding Heart has been on my list of places to visit for quite some time now, but I wasn't about to pass up a chance to try the bakery's goods outside of its Roscoe Village location. Especially after the cheerful barista bragged up the teacakes to no end. So I took it one step further and ordered the blueberry, her favorite flavor.
Wrapped in a decorative sleeve and topped with a sweet crumbly coating, Bleeding Heart's teacake yielded fresh, plump blueberries with every bite. Did I mention it was served with a homemade cinnamon and honey-infused butter? I won't tell you how I licked the knife clean on that one, but I will say that I needed a smoke afterward.
Let's get back to Cafe Avanti for a minute. Aside from stocking some of Chicago's most stellar pastries, this place racks up serious points for using beans from The Coffee and Tea Exchange in Lakeview. On top of that, the shop offers free Wi-Fi, a large outdoor patio and a full breakfast and lunch menu. Cafe Avanti is cash only, so stuff your pockets before heading over.
