The way animals communicate, is through emotion. We talk to them, and they learn certain words and commands, but most of the time, they are getting the feeling behind our words. Body language also plays apart in how animals tune into us.

Monitor emotions
Whether around children or animals, it is necessary to constantly monitor our emotions, especially if in the position of caregiver, trainer or master. Animals are watching and observing those around them, much more than one would think. Every flicker of a facial expression, every change in body language, every tone of voice is being registered within the emotions of the animal.
When one is under stress, one's pets will often exhibit signs of feeling stressed. Animals, however, may be very good at hiding their emotions, until the feeling of dis ease shows up later in a physical illness. For example, Cancer, in all animals, is often the result of negative emotions harbored inwardly over a period of time.
If one is going through a stressful situation, one needs to be ever mindful of how their animals are tuning in to that stress. It is especially important to avoid scheduling an animal for a major surgery or event, when one is under a lot of stress. The animal is much less likely to have a smooth recovery or perform well, when under the care or guidance of a stressed out owner.
Conversely, when we are feeling happy and peaceful, those feelings are tranmitted to our animals or those in our care, as well.
