Back in 1969, Britney Spears's mother was 14, JFK Jr. was 8, Kurt Cobain was 2, and a children's program went on the air that was to revolutionize the way kids learned, from Maine to Mexico and way, way beyond.
Sesame Street is now celebrating its 40th anniversary on the air. Like you, I spent many a weekday afternoon between 4 and 5 pm absorbing the lessons of Muppets and men, and I couldn't resist putting up some of my favorite clips from the vintage years.
Here's Kermit and a little girl going through the alphabet, which the little girl insists has an extra letter. You could have a heart like a bowling ball and it would melt to watch this.
Here Kermit and Cookie Monster have a guessing game. Fantastic acting here by Jim Henson and Frank Oz, and I love Cookie's use of French.
This is Mr. Johnson, a.k.a. "Fat Blue," who Jon Stewart takes pleasure in comparing to RNC chairman Michale Steele, insisting to Grover that he wants the big hamburger.
We've got to have some animation in here, and it's a natural fact that you can't go wrong with "Ladybug's Picnic."
And I can't not close out with the lovely Madrigal Alphabet segment.
