The Midwest Independent Film Festival continues this week with Greg Kohs' documentary Song Sung Blue. Keeping with their "First Tuesday" tradition, the regional series will be turning out the lights at the Landmark Century Cinema on N. Clark at 7:30PM, March 3rd. The director will be available for Q&A following the show, along with a reception at Forno Diablo on W. Diversey (admission included in $10 movie ticket price).
Lightning and Thunder are Mike and Claire Sardina, a popular Milwaukee Neil Diamond tribute act. Kohs reportedly met the duo about 10 or 15 years ago after their performance at a Harley-Davidson event and began filming their career in its series of ups and downs. Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder makes an appearance in the documentary as backup singer for one of their largest-ever shows (though Diamond himself does not apparently appear). However, every synopsis, appraisal, and critical review of the film thus far makes mention of a certain tragedy that befalls the duo, causing them to reconsider their career, reputation, and even means of earning an income. After the film won at Slamdance last year, Kohs told Filmmaker Magazine how he was so affected by the couple's "uninhibited passion, persistence and honesty" as he followed them from Milwaukee to Chicago and back.
What reviews the film has received are overwhelmingly positive, although Variety called it "kitschily amusing", as well as somewhat depressing at times. Last months opening of the Midwest Festival was completely sold out, so perhaps the blogosphere will host some new opinions of the film following Tuesday's screening. Greg Kohs' Song Sung Blue will certainly be reviewed here following this upcoming event and will also be screened later this month at the East Lansing, Michigan and Tiburon, California Film Festivals.
