160 breeds of cats and dogs joined together for two days in the Javits Center in New York City for a peaceable and enjoyable event called Meet the Breeds. The demonstrations of agility and earth dog and police dogs had everyone cheering.
Cats did agility, too, zooming around their agility course, which was enclosed inside a huge cage so none of the independent minded cats could decide to skip out. A speaker flashed photos of all the cat breeds on a screen and explained them to the seated crowd.
There were so many families and kids. So many chances for them to learn about dogs. So many chances for the breed and training experts to teach about dogs. An entire Girl Scout troop was circulating with questions to ask for their homework about the breeds.
Many breeds had wonderful booths with decorations, costumes, literature, and laidback dogs. There were 5 Miscellaneous breeds and 9 Foundation Stock Service Breeds that took advantage of the chance to educate people. These are very rare breeds, so the crowd had mostly never seen them before.
The kids weren't the only ones learning -- I had never seen a Schapendoe or Chinook in person, and did not know there is a breed called "American Russell Terrier.” The American Kennel Club gave every national breed club the chance to participate, if they wanted. It is really a shame that some popular breeds were not represented, like Dachshunds (most popular AKC breed in Manhattan), Whippets, and Maltese.
The CFA was there with booths for every breed of cat -- and some of the owners were dressed to resemble their cats! There was a vendor who painted kids faces to look like cats. They were adorable.
My Brussels Griffon, Nessie, was a great ambassador for her breed. She greeted everyone and loved the attention.
The next meet the breeds will be in Long Beach, California, in December 12 & 13. If you have a chance to go, it’s a lot of fun.
