Dallas Peacemakers Inc. will present an open forum on Law and Discrimination: Women's Rights on Thursday, May 21 at the Center for Community Cooperation, 2900 Live Oak in East Dallas. The event begins at 6:30 pm with networking and light refreshments, followed at 7 pm by the program. The event is free and open to the public.
Panelists are:
Rick Halperin, Ph.D., Director of Human Rights Education at Southern Methodist University. He serves on the boards of Amnesty International USA and the Texas Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty; and
Qudsia Mirza, who recently completed a post as Visiting Professor of Law at the University of Cincinnati College of Law. Her teaching and research interests include Islamic Law,International Human Rights Law, Discrimination Law, and Feminist Legal Theory.
According to its website, Peacemakers Incorporated is a nonprofit, non-partisan organization founded in 1987 to sponsor international women's peace conferences. Its founder, retired journalist Vivian Castleberry, will be featured in KERA-TV's Texas Trailblazer series at 8 p.m. Sunday , May 17.
The organization's most recent event, the Third International Women's Peace Conference held in July, 2007 in Dallas, focused on Empowering Peacemakers. Nearly 1,400 delegates from 45 countries and 37 states attended. Conference delegates developed action plans for grassroots peacemaking through specific actions in their respective communities and countries. Through its website and other means, Peacemakers Inc. helps individuals and organizations collaborate in these peace actions and network with peacemakers throughout the world. Women and men involved in peacemaking share their success stories, advice and requests for assistance through Peacemakers Inc.
Between conferences, Peacemakers sponsors other events and actions, locally and globally, to further its mission of creating peace through education, communication and friendship.
