Weather Forecast For Houston And Vicinity, Tuesday, February 9, 2010
Discussion
(Relevant Graphics Below The Text)
While not seeing the histrionics developing over the northeastern U.S. (yes, they are getting another blizzard), the Houston metro will see its own share of weather-related problems over the next few days. Colder air has once again taken over all of Texas, and the regime originated in far northern Canada. So cold is the temperature array that the rain/snow line will move perilously close to the Bayou City as yet another storm forms off of the subtropical jet stream to our south. Actually, like its counterpart now aiming at the big cities along the Interstate 95 corridor, this feature will be a combination of two distinct entities, one out of Oregon and the other from the wild southern branch flow in the equatorial Pacific Ocean.
Given the very blocked nature of the upper air pattern, the new low will track well to our south, at a time when Arctic air is poised nearby. Clouds will increase after a very cold Wednesday morning, and rain should set in after nightfall. The Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex should see 4 - 8 inches of snow from this system, and sleet with freezing rain may create power and transportation issues as near as Waller, Montgomery, Liberty and San Jacinto counties. This being a lower latitude location, I am confident that most of what falls in daylight Thursday (with the storm strengthening) will be rain. But after sunset, and with a cooling atmospheric column in the deformation zone of the low, the mixed precipitation, and some glazing, could reach the northern half of the Houston metro. If that were to happen (I give odds of 1 in 3 at this point), then it could be a slow, tense drive in from the north on Friday morning.
But sun will return on Friday afternoon, and the first two-thirds of the weekend will be mainly fair, but on the cold side. On Sunday, yet another impulse from the subtropical jet stream (all stand up and say, THANK YOU, EL NINO !!!) will bring back the rain. And following that rain? Why COLDER and WINDY to start next week!
