Now that we have Thanksgiving out of the way, I think it high time that we got into a true Holiday Season mood! Granted, over the next 24 hours you will probably be pretty grouchy, what with the cloudy, drizzly conditions that turn into a steady rain late tonight and tomorrow. But, back in the hills of West Texas, is something that will give you a jolt and make you realize that we are entering December. Yes, that time of year when your wallet empties, credit cards wear out, and overcoats are worn. An upper level low will be reacting with a surface front over the western Gulf of Mexico, and soon the chills over the Pecos Range will be visiting Houston. The rain-snow line will get very close to the Bayou City by Wednesday morning, and if you live in areas north and west of Interstate 610, you have a fair chance at catching a sleet pellet or snow flurry! There may even be some minor accumulations of snowfall as far south as a Waco.....Corsicana....Marshall line before the storm pulls out on Wednesday afternoon.
The coldest air of the season follows on Wednesday night into Friday morning. Wind chills may be in the upper 20s for a time on Wednesday, with north breezes sailing past 30 mph. Subfreezing nocturnal lows seem likely as skies clear and winds gradually diminish. Frost potential is very high by daybreak on December 4.
Ahead of a new storm and Arctic outbreak from Alaska and northwestern Canada (no, I am not kidding....), moisture and warmer temperatures are likely to return Friday night and Saturday. Some showers may occur on December 5, with heavier thunderstorms with the approach of a cold front on Saturday night. If I believe the GGEM and ECMWF ensemble packages (and, with its prominent thumb projection block into Alaska, I do....), we will see record cold temperatures for at least part of next week.
So, are you in a holiday mood yet?
