Discussion

(Relevant Graphics Follow The Text)

All of that bright sunshine, combined with low relative humidity and lack of wind, can make for a quick warming trend. Indeed, as we end the week, readings will be reaching the middle 80s (F). As high pressure moves to our east, the resultant wind between the anticyclone and an advancing storm/trough from the western U.S. will make for some mighty toasty (or perhaps sultry is a better adjective) weekend forecast.

Since the trough complex in question is moving so slowly, Houston will get stuck in an unseasonably warm, muggy air mass on Saturday through much of Monday. Temperatures will climb to near 90 degrees F, with the heat index in some locations nearing 100 degrees F. No, I am not kidding! Showers and locally intense thunderstorms on Sunday evening and Monday will herald a shift to cooler and drier air that may last Tuesday and next Wednesday. However, another storm could bring back the higher dewpoints, and with it rain/thunder, later next week.

It would appear (at least by examining the computer forecasts) that we will make it into the Thanksgiving weekend without any major intrusions of Arctic air. There is some bitter cold forecast to envelop Alaska and western Canada in the medium range and longer term. But without any ridging on the Canadian/U.S. side of the North Pole, none of the cold values will drain into the lower Great Plains and Old South. And while I think we will see another important storm and some what cooler readings in the November 22 - 26 time frame, differentials from normal will be relatively minor.

But at least the risk of seeing 90 degrees F should be much less!
