The forecast for the weekend could best be summed up as an ongoing "chance for rain and thunderstorms". However, this column being what it is, further explanation is required. So not only am I going to tell you why this weekend will not be one of the best that you have seen weather-wise, I will also explain what makes this outlook different from others that mentioned rain and thunder.
A strong cold front will move through Houston early on Friday, accompanied by locally heavy showers and thunderstorms. Then, responding to the formation of a subtropical high over the central and eastern Gulf of Mexico (west-southwest flow aloft), the thermal boundary will come to a screeching halt about 125 miles to our south. Tropical Storm Olaf and its moisture fetch will become enmeshed with the frontal structure, which will begin the a slow net north motion (as a warm front) by Saturday morning. Overrunning and convective processes will be unleashed, with heavy rain and thunderstorms over much of Texas (including the Bayou City) through Sunday and into Monday. Initially, the cloud cover and rainfall will block temperature rises, but October 5 - 9 the heat and humidity will win out. One or two of the days next week will feature afternoon readings in the middle 90s, with the nearby polar/tropical transition zone providing the potential for thunderstorms.
But the cool air will return in a big way NEXT weekend, probably with low humidity and some suburban lows in the 50s (F). So just hold on...one more week....
