Andy Friedman & The Other Failures brought their unique style of Country music to The Evening Muse as they introduced a relatively full house to their new project - "Weary Things".

Andy does not bring your fathers country sound, but it is country none-the-less.  It's more in the style of a modern day Woody Guthrie storytelling machine with appropriate, pause for effect, street smart sarcasm imbedded within his song.  Just when you think you know what the next word will be, Andy takes the story on a new twist.  Examples like - you can "sleep" your way to the top or you can work at the stop-n-shop;  a mans' gotta do what a mans' gotta do - a song about mans inability to execute his plan, or "stuff-happens" - just depends on your outlook!

You have to keep up with Andy's wit and humor in his songs.  Freddy's Backroom is a song that you may have never heard before, but it's a story you know well if you're over the age of 30.  Your neighborhood pub may not be home, but it's a place you're comfortable.  Road Trippin' is another favorite of mine and I love the bands gig closing tune - "The Friedman Holler".  Every band should have a set closing tune as good as this.

The Other Failures are talented lead guitarist Matt "Rockteacher" Walsh who is also an exceptionally personable guy who enjoys meeting people.   Greg Donahue is the current Bass player but is about to leave the group in pursuit of his own endeavors on the West Coast later in the month.  I wish Greg all the best as he goes into the future on his personal quest for what life brings a young man in these times.  Adriane Palikat is the drummer for the band.  This talented young lady is very bright and self aware.  Hailing from KL, Malaysia she came to the US about 18 months ago to attend classes in NY in the area of Jazz percussions.  Having her entertainers visa she decided to hang out with us for a while, travel the US, meet the people, understand the culture and take maximum advantage of the opportunity afforded her.  I'm not sure what the details are of the path that brought her to Andy and his band, but it was fortuitous fate for both parties!  This lady can play the drums too!  When I first saw them play last year the oddity of an asian lady on drums for a country band was not lost on me - but she pulls it off so more power to her!

I tip my hat to Andy and the team for a very nice new studio piece of work - "Weary Things" brings Andy's witty song-writing to the forefront and provides the listener with a little more insight into the workings of Andys mind as he communicates the stories in his head through his art.  A logical next step to his first effort, "Taken Man", which I enjoyed as well. 2 for 2..

Best wishes to Andy - I look forward to the Other Failures bringing this brand of Country back to Charlotte.

Cheers,

Monty
