Find your muse @ the Evening Muse - Feb 16th - in review
Photos of the open mic...
Find your muse open mic night at The Evening Muse hosted by Hannah with featured guest artist Lowry brought out the talent from around Charlotte as well as its music fans. There were only a few vacant seats and little standing room at the Muse Monday night for a lengthy line-up at the open mic as well as the 10 PM feature of the Brooklyn band, Lowry.
In the event your are not familiar with this weekly event at The Evening Muse I offer this short description and a link to the Find Your Muse Myspace page for a more detailed description. Short description is that it is just that - an open mic evening. Artists who wish to perform sign up, the order is fairly determined, and then each performer does a couple of songs, or poems, with the time limit of 10 minutes. At 10PM the featured artists does their 30 minutes or so and then the open mic continues. Very simple, very supportive crowd. You're surrounded by other artists and music fans - a support structure of peers!
A few highlights of the open mic this night:
- Ralph recited a couple of prose/poems. The first was an original reflecting upon the celestial heavens. The second was a dark recital of the hurting of a mother who had lost her son and faced the tragic truth of the funeral home. An amazingly intense rendition of both which had the attention of the entire house.
- Kenni Falls, who will be one of the performers at the CrownTown Showdown at the Double Door Inn this coming Wednesday, graced the stage with a couple of tunes which highlighted why the folks need to come out to see her Wednesday.
- Pradigy and friends come on stage and showed why they are a rising act within the Charlotte music scene. I'd encourage you to reach out to their MySpace page and have a listen to this talented musician. A unique mix of rap, rock & hip hop.
- Next up were Tyler Ray & Katy. They tried out some new material which was alittle rough around the edges, but they're young and this is an open mic, meant to try new material.
- Jamie Robinson performed a song he had written this weekend and it went over very well with the audience. For his second song he was joined by Drew & Justin. Drew sang a beautiful melody accompanied by Jamie and Justin on guitar. A lovely voice - a lovely song.
- Siblings Jordan & Ashley Hardy took to the stage next. These two voices went very well together with Ashley providing very nice lead vocals and Jordan harmonizing. I do hope to see these two again!
- Long time singer-songwriter and frequent performer at the Open mic night, George Terry, shared a couple of new songs with the crowd.
- Stephen Morrison shared a very emotive tune sung with conviction to a powerful acoustic guitar. Some very nice new material that he has been working on.
- Eric Scott Guthrie was the last performer before Lowry took the stage. Eric was the former host of the Find Your Muse weekly open mic before turning the baton over to Hannah. It's evident that Eric has been honing his skills for quite some time as he sang and played a couple of lovely numbers that you couldn't help but listen to and tap along with.
As promised, at 10PM the open mic was interrupted and the featured artist Lowry took the stage. This was a full band set of 5 songs plus an encore. As usual these guys were at the top of their game! Lowry is made up of Alex, Heidi, Jasper, Crash and Greg. Greg is the insane one on lead guitar! Photos of this set - click this link. The great news is that Lowry will be returning to The Evening Muse for a full show on Feb 28th. Put that in your calendar as it will be a night to remember.
Since it was a school night, I had to dash after the Lowry set, but the open mic continued on afterwards. As usual it was another great night of Finding Your Muse at The Evening Muse! Thanks to Hannah for a great job hosting, entertaining and keeping things moving through the night!
Cheers,
Monty
