According to a recent study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, most Americans consume about 37% of their daily calories from sugary drinks. Whether you drink soda, fruit punch, sweet tea, or lemonade, none of these calories provide you with any nutritional benefits. A 16 oz bottle of soda has about 200 calories. Since there are 3,500 calories in one pound, just one soda per day adds up to just over 20 pounds per year. If you swap that soda for water or unsweetened ice tea, you’ll lose almost 2 pounds per month or just over 20 pounds per year without making any additional changes to your diet or exercise plan.
This isn’t to say that you have to drink only water or unsweetened ice tea to be healthy. You can also look for juices that contain 100% fruit or vegetable juice. Of course these beverages are not calorie free, but at least these calories count towards your daily fruit or vegetable requirements. If you swap soda for orange juice, you most likely won’t lose much weight, but you’ll derive a number of health benefits from the added vitamins and antioxidants.
With obesity on the rise for both adults and children, the government is looking for ways to get Americans back in shape. One proposed option is to pass a federal tax on soda and other sugary beverages. Perhaps with their wallets as well as their waistlines on the line, more Americans will start making healthier beverage choices.
