Inflammation is the body’s normal response to stress and injury. For example, you twist your ankle running, and it swells. Due to certain imbalances in the body, inflammation can become chronic and start to harm the body instead of protect it. This becomes a potentially serious health problem that causes various diseases including asthma, allergies, arthritis, irritable bowel syndrome, and several skin disorders. Modern research suggests that chronic inflammation also causes more serious diseases such as Type II diabetes, heart disease, osteoporosis, and Alzheimer’s disease.

Foods that Heal

One of the best fruits for controlling inflammation is cherries. A 2006 study published in the Journal of Nutrition found cherries significantly reduced inflammation in the body.

Omega-3 fatty acids found in fish also reduce inflammation. If you’re eating salmon to prevent the onset of an inflammatory condition, be sure to purchase wild-caught fish. It's usually more expensive, but higher in omega-3’s than farm-raised fish. Omega-3 supplements also available if you don’t like the taste of fish. If you're allergic to fish, you can try a flaxseed supplement. Flaxseed delivers similar benefts but it is more difficult for the body to absorb.

Ginger is another food with strong anti-inflammatory properties. Ginger has been used as an herbal remedy to treat and prevent various inflammatory conditions for years. It tastes great in many baked goods like cookies and muffins. You can also try ginger tea or ginger supplements.
Foods to Avoid

While there are many foods that reduce inflammation, there are also foods that aggravate it. The biggest offenders are foods high in omega-6 fatty acids such as safflower, sunflower, peanut and soy oils. Refined sugars and artificial preservatives, often found in high levels in processed foods, are also a major contributor to inflammation.
