Booths with local wares at the Christkindl Market

Another round of snow heads into Chicagoland tonight, so why not find the silver lining between the long commute, slick sidewalks and frigid temps? The up side: There's something about a dusting of the white stuff that boosts holiday spirit, and there's plenty of festive cheer going on this weekend in Lincoln Square on the North Side.

  • Do it up Deutschland-style at Lincoln Square Christkindl Market, Leland and Western (Friday, December 5th, 3 pm - 10 pm; Saturday, December 6th, 9 am - 10 pm; Sunday, December 7th, 11:30am - 7 pm): If Oktoberfest and Mayfest don't come often enough for you, the German fanfare that will be pulsing through this neighborhood's Christkindl Market should tide you over for a couple months. Under a massive tent you'll find traditional German eats—brats, potato pancakes, goulash and strudel —to warm your belly, or you can hit the dance floor to the sounds of Jimmy's Bavarians and Trash Martini to heat things up. Suck down a few cups of glogg or Bavarian brew while you check out the live carolers, ice sculptures, roasted chestnuts and local crafts. Bring the little ones and park it at the Kids Corner, where they'll decorate cookies, make ornaments, get their faces painted and take pictures with Santa (view a full children's event schedule here). Admission is free; stop by Saturday at 4:30 p.m. for the tree lighting ceremony.
  • Free vino at Provenance, 2312 W Leland: This neighborhood wine shop hosts free wine tastings every Thursday, but the hectic holiday season brings with it more excuses to booze. Stop in on Thursday from 6-9 p.m. for its usual tasting, or swing in when you need to get out of the cold at the Christkindl Market on Friday from 5-7 p.m., Saturday from 3-6 p.m. and Sunday from 2-5 p.m. for other samplings. Get a buzz while landing some gift ideas for the oenophile in your life.
  • Toy drive and cocktail party at Little Green Baby, 4654 N. Rockwell (Friday, December 5th, 5-9 pm): Bring one unwrapped toy for a child in need and gain entry to this cocktail party held at the green-minded kids boutique. While you're there, shop for eco-friendly clothes and accessories for all the tots on your "nice" list. The small, organized store offers a well-edited selection of items by brands like Positively Organic, Tea Collection, Green to Grow and Fig. Attendees can enter a raffle to win products by Uppababy and local retailers.
