Kansas City Wizards goalkeeper Kevin Hartman thanks his defense after his team edged 10-man New York Red Bulls 1-0 on Thursday. The win puts KC (3-2-1) atop the East [Kansas City Star]:
"We wish we would have done better with the man advantage and had gone ahead and secured the second goal. But ... we went ahead and finished it off without a ton of shots. We were secure in the back, and I think that’s a step in the right direction."
The Red Bulls (1-3-2) had defender Carlos Johnson sent off in the second minute of the game—the quickest ejection in MLS history—for a foul that led to the winning penalty kick.
New York striker Juan Pablo Angel sums it up [AP]:
"The whole course of the game changed with that first play. Everything was uphill."
Columbus Crew coach Robert Warzycha says his club needed last week's break to recover from injuries. Having opened 2009 with three of four games away from home, the Crew hosts an in-form Chicago Fire on Saturday [Columbus Dispatch]:
"It absolutely helped. That's a lot of time in hotels, a lot of time in (planes). We didn't get any rest, and that's where some of the injuries came from."
Chicago Fire (2-0-3) at Columbus Crew (0-2-3), 7 p.m. ET (Fox Soccer Channel).

Real Salt Lake boss Jason Kries wants to see a 90-minute commitment from his team when it hosts an unbeaten New England Revolution Saturday. RSL has fallen behind in three fourths of its games so far this season [MLSNet]:
"We've got to figure out a way to get these guys to come out and play in the first like they do in the second half. For me, four games in a row, four bad first halves, four good second halves. If we figure out how to play 90 minutes, we'll be all right."
New England Revolution (2-0-2) at Real Salt Lake (2-2-0), 9 p.m. ET (Direct Kick, Match Center).

The Colorado Rapids have proved they can beat the Los Angeles Galaxy, edging their winless West opponents twice already this season. That makes Rapids Examiner Deron White wary of Saturday's matchup [Examiner.com]:
"All games are tough, and this game will be no different. Like a starving dog looking for scraps, the longer LA goes winless, the more dangerous they become. ... The Rapids may face a team motivated by a desperation to score, [or] a frustrated team looking to foul the Rapids off the pitch."
LA Galaxy (0-1-3) at Colorado Rapids (2-2-1), 9:30 p.m. ET (Direct Kick, Match Center).
