Ever wonder what it would be like to run through a vineyard? Well now you don’t have to as you join other runners in the 16th running of the Run Through the Grapevine 8k at Linganore Winecellars in Mount Airy this Sunday, November 1.

This race is a very challenging course with the hills, the woods and the occasional deer that makes an appearance. Starting up the hill around the barn and then down the hill towards the road you begin to realize that challenging really doesn’t describe this course, it just begins to describe what you are in for the next few miles. Once you come back around the side of the group of grapevines you see the woods looming ahead of you. This is where the single track begins. Make sure you get in line as this is usually a choke point as many runners converge at this point at once.

Coming out of the woods the fields open up before you as you burst from the treeline. In front of you are the grapevines, stripped of their summer glory as they hang from posts and wire. Turning right takes you along the tree line as you head around the wine tasting barn. The crowd cheers you on as you head across a small stream and pond to turn around and run back towards the grapevines. Run through the grapevines, up the hill with hills, single track through the woods and even a deer hazard (a runner was hit last year – she got back up and finished the race in fine form).

Once you cross the finish line you receive your wine glass and head towards the picnic tables laden with various foods and apple cider. Once you are done with the apple cider head inside the winery for free wine tasting. This is a race that you don’t want to miss. Online registration is closed but race day should still be open. For more information go to Howard County Striders website.
