Alberto Beto Perez, creator of Zumba, is a dance choreographer who has choreographed for the hip shaking pop star. He is also a group exercise instructor.
Zumba is a fitness class based on dance moves taken from Salsa, the Merengue, Flamenco and Samba. Choreography changes every 3-4 minutes with different songs. The same moves are used but in different combinations with each song so it makes it easy for a beginner to learn yet keeps it challenging for advanced dancers.
Just as step aerobics was invented by accident (the creator, Gin Miller, was rehabbing an injury at home “stepping” up and down on her backyard steps) so was Zumba. Perez forgot his music for the group exercise class he was teaching and at the last minute used Latin music. The class went crazy and Zumba was born.
Las Vegas Zumba instructor, Maria Castellote, states, “The people in the Zumba classes are always yelling and jumping. They don’t care if they get the steps at first because they know they’ll eventually get it. In fact, it feels more like a party with everyone dancing, having fun, burning calories and getting a great workout. It’s so much more fun than running on a treadmill!”
