An American Council on Exercise (ACE) survey predicts with the current state of the economy 2009 will show a 48 percent reduction in gym memberships and a 52 percent reduction in individuals purchasing private training. There are still chic ways to shape without breaking the bank. It’s all about being creative. I’ve done the research so you don’t have to.

1. To burn fat:  walk or run at the local track. If you need a challenge add running bleachers, completing intervals, or adding jumps.   Plus, outdoor interval based workouts is what is trendy in current health and magazines. FREE

2. Home Workouts:  PhysioBalls (Prices range from $7 - $25) look like a giant beach balls. They are actually quite sturdy and can be used to perform a variety of exercises. Since you’re utilizing both balance and core stabilization you can use this one piece of equipment for both simple advanced movements. Fitness Books & Magazines ($3 – $40) can provide you with an abundance of exercises you can do at home. Make sure you make it a point to follow their program for one month and then make it more challenging by adding more exercises or increasing your resistance. Resistance Tubing ($5 - $15) are rubber tubes that can be used for toning muscles. There are five different resistances so you can work small to large muscle groups. The tubing is extremely light weight and can be easily kept out of sight when they’re not in use. You can get the best deals on exercise equipment at Marshalls and TJ Maxx.

3. The Adventures Fitness Meet-Up Group combines adventure with fitness. If you’re bored of gym workouts but enjoy the outdoors and meeting new people this group is for you. Some of the unique activities the Adventures Fitness Group uses to get in shape are running zip lines, mud runs, scavenger hunts, and skyrobics. Their activities aren’t frequent so this is the perfect supplement to mix up your current exercise routine at a very low price. Activities usually cost between ($1-$5).

4. The Henderson Recreation Center has an everyday cost of $12.00 per month for gym memberships. There are no locker room facilities but the actual fitness center has everything you need for a well-rounded workout and is amazingly clean. If you plan on working out sporadically they also offer Swim ‘n Trim passes in which you can purchase a ten visit punch card for $20.00 to utilize either the fitness center or the pool. Those visits end up costing you a mere $2 a visit.

5. The best fitness trainers don’t need any equipment to train clients,” states personal trainer Larry Panicali, “You can walk, swim, hike, or run for a cardio workout. For resistance training all you need is a space of approximately 7 by 10 feet in your home or you can use your backyard to perform core work, push-ups, lunges, bridge work, squats, dumbbell curls, shoulder exercises, or tricep presses using exercise bands, a physioball, or solely your body weight. The list is endless.” FREE

Staying in shape is vital not only to your fitness level but also in preventing illness. The cost of your health: priceless.
