UNLV alum and WNBA basketball player, Sequoia Holmes smoked radio personality Paul Howard in a one-on-one basketball game last night at the Club Sport gym.
Paul Howard, known as Pauly to his radio audience, is a sports radio personality on ESPN and Fox Sports. In recent broadcasts, Howard was “trashing” women’s basketball on air and issued a challenge to a WNBA player to play him in a one-on-one basketball game.
According to Holmes, Howard’s camp contacted UNLV women’s basketball coach Kathy Olivier for referrals and she knew exactly who to set up a basketball game with. Sequoia Holmes, 23, the UNLV star alum just happened to be in town from playing in the WNBA. During the WNBA offseason Holmes plays overseas.
Lucky for Howard, Holmes was in Las Vegas at the time of his dare. Holmes took the challenge because she wants to be an advocate for women’s sports and basketball. According to Holmes,
“If someone practices their craft you have to respect them no matter what their sex.
I run in basketball but I wouldn’t challenge an Olympian runner!”
In less than twenty minutes Holmes beat Howard 21-11.
As one spectator stated, “She blew his doors off. He just was not at her fitness or skill level.” Holmes adds,
“Women’s basketball deserves a lot more respect than it gets.
We bring much more to the game than acrobatics.
We are team oriented, play a defensive game, and work hard at fundamentals.
It’s harder to play fundamentally than using God given talents.”
Holmes wants to return to the university level both as a coach and student when she ‘retires’ from the WNBA. While coaching women’s basketball she plans to attend classes to earn her master’s degree to become a high school guidance counselor.
Howard, when asked what he thought of the outcome, stated
“She beat the heck out of me. She was very quick and went around me a lot.
I didn’t think she would be that quick.”
He added,
“I work out, do cardio and weights.
I really thought I could win but five minutes into the game I was gassed!”
