Even the election of a black president apparently isn't enough to disabuse the NAACP of the notion that the U.S. is full of racists.
Edward Vaughn, head of the Alabama NAACP, doesn't want Mobile's Azalea Trail Maids to partake in Obama's inauguration parade because they remind him of slavery.
"These are not just regular costumes. These are the costumes that remind someone of the plantation in Gone with the Wind," Edward Vaughn said in a phone interview.
Vaughn went on to say the group would be the laughing stock of the Inauguration. County leaders say nothing could be further from the truth.
"We want everyone to know that these young ladies do not need to be identified with slavery," said Mobile County Commissioner Stephen Nodine.
Yeaaah.
One wonders if Mr. Vaughn has even bothered to consider the possibility that reminding people of slavery might just be the point. As in: a black dude's in the White House.
After the election I mused that the Obama victory meant we could finally get rid of prejudicial affirmative action programs and the like. Indeed, it was an indication that the state, by treating blacks like incompetents and children, is much more racist than any individual.
Clearly I was on to something. The NAACP and other race-baiters survive by exploiting "racism" wherever they can find it, even if they have to manufacture it. Every criticism of Our Holy Savior will be due to the fact that he's "black," you see, not because he's a thief, liar, or warmonger.
Ironically, the election of a black person to the highest political office in the land is the one thing that could cast the NAACP into irrelevance. Expect them to stop at nothing to prevent it.
