Will Grigg shares the sad story of Evan Vela Carnahan, an army sergeant used by the U.S. military to take the fall for criminal commanding officers, and explains why the Iraq war was never really about "liberating" a country or protecting America -- it was "pure military colonialism."
During the past six years, the Bush Regime has followed an inverted Nuremberg formula – call it the "Abu Ghraib Doctrine" – under which the legal accountability for war crimes resides only with those at the bottom of the chain of command. To palliate public opinion in Iraq, a handful of low-ranking soldiers were sent to prison after the Abu Ghraib atrocities were made public.
Evan Carnahan was sent to prison for much the same reason: The killing of [Iraqi civilian Genei Nasir Khudair al-]Janabi, which took place on May 11, 2007, came just as the much-heralded "surge" began, a program in which U.S. occupation commanders pacified the Sunni Triangle by bribing the leaders of the Sunni insurgency.
Whereas Nazi leaders were tried for their malfeasance after WWII, George W. Bush and his top brass will walk away from their war crimes scot-free while the grunts rot in jail cells in their stead.
Mr. Grigg notes, "Evan Carnahan is merely one of countless thousands of fundamentally decent Americans whose earnest patriotism led them to participate in a world-historic crime," and rightly cautions us never to allow ourselves "to become the agents of another person's will."
This would be a good lesson to recall if your son or daughter happens to express interest in joining the War on Arabs.
